Using Logic with Cold Fusion Conditional Processing

Topic:
I enjoyed reading Jeffrey Houser’s excellent article: “Making Decisions in Your Code with cfif” in the CF Developer’s Journal (April 2004) and decided to write a follow up to expand on the issues of using cfif with complex logic. I believe that more information is needed on the logical choices represented in a cfelse tag when a developer has complex statements in the cfif tag. Here is all the information needed to safely work with complex logic statements. Outline: 1. Review of the logical operations: NOT, AND, OR/XOR, IMP, EQV 2. Natural order of operations when operations are combined. 3. De Morgan’s laws on the negation of ANDs and ORs. 4. Relating cfelse to deMorgan’s laws. 5. Exercises to apply deMorgan’s laws in cfelse clauses. 6. Reducing IMP to NOTs, ANDs and ORs. 7. Negation of IMP. 8. Reducing EQV to NOTs, ANDs and ORs. 9. Negation of EQV. 10. Safe cfelse coding practices. 11. Resources and links.
